We all know the bright orange habanero pepper – intimidatingly hot, yet surprisingly fruity. What many don’t know is that this pepper comes from the Caribbean, by way of Havana, Cuba. That’s right, in Spanish, “habanero” actually just means somebody from Havana! This is also the name of one of our favorite arias, Habanera, from Bizet’s Carmen. In this context, Habanera can be translated as a dance from Havana.
